Tahoe City Winter Sports Park
By Tim Hauserman
The Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, run by the Tahoe City Parks and Recreation Department, is a little gem in the center of Tahoe City that is a perfect place to introduce the family to winter fun. The recent snow has allowed the park to groom the cross-country ski trails. The park also has a skating rink, sledding hill and the Cafe Zenon cafe and bar.
The Sports Park has the only ice skating rink on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Parents can keep one eye on their future Tara Lipinski on the ice while they stay warm in the Cafe Zenon bar sampling one of their signature cocktail concoctions such as Isn’t She Lovely, The Wanderer, or Winter Waltz.
Families can also inexpensively enjoy a cross country ski on the park’s mostly level terrain with views of Lake Tahoe and downtown Tahoe City. Or kids and their big kid parents can take a slide down the sledding hill. Best of all, you can combine it all and ski, skate and sled all at the same place. And at a reasonable price. A non-resident adult can get a full day, everything pass at the park including rentals for just $40, and adults can either ski or sled for just $12 and kids under 12 can ski for free and sled for only $5.
(The track of a recent ski I did at the Sports Park...except it was white and looked like the picture above)
They also have a few specials going on. Monday Night Family Skate Night allows a family of five to skate including rentals for only $25. Or the Season Pass Holder buddy pass special allows you to bring four buddies to skate and they only pay $5 a piece.
Once all the fun outdoor stuff is done, Sports Park visitors can sample the wares of the Cafe Zenon, such as Bahn Mi, Mac and Cheese, Spinach Salad, Kim Chi Hot dog, and Pho. Weekend brunch includes Eggs Benedict, French Toast or a Beignet. Once you’ve had your fill stroll through Tahoe City along the shore of the lake, or catch a movie at the Tahoe Art Haus Cinema in The Cobblestone.
Today is the day to go to the Sports Park, because it’s Monday Night Special Day! But if that doesn’t work, be sure and get there before closing day on March 11th.
