Lake Tahoe Cross Country Ski Areas
North Lake Tahoe is a fantastic destination for cross-country skiing, offering a variety of trails and beautiful landscapes. A few are integrated within local ski resorts, and others are within park areas that offer endless trails, perfect for snow-shoeing or cross country skiing.
Here are some popular cross-country skiing areas in the North Lake Tahoe region:
Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area:
Located in Tahoe City, this ski area offers over 65 kilometers of groomed trails suitable for all skill levels. Trails wind through pine forests and meadows, providing stunning views of Lake Tahoe.
The trails are marked for their difficulty level and some trails ascend upward. Other trails connect in a large circle and pass by a small lake that was used for ice making. The old ice house is still visible. Tahoe XC also offers lessons, rentals, and a cozy lodge.
Tahoe City Winter Sports Park:
Located within the golf course of Tahoe City, this park is known for its groomed cross-country ski trails. It's a great place for both beginners and experienced skiers, offering a variety of trails with different levels of difficulty.
North Tahoe Regional Park:
Located in Tahoe Vista, this park offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking trails, a disc golf course, sports fields, and a playground. In the winter, it also features facilities for snowshoeing and sledding.
The trails wind through the forest and offer a variety of small inclines with views. On the western side of the park, the trails connect and are more level, perfect for beginners.
Northstar California Resort:
Northstar has a network of cross-country trails with varying difficulty levels. The resort offers equipment rentals and lessons for those new to cross-country skiing.
The trails take you through the picturesque Martis Valley.
Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort:
As one of the largest cross-country ski resorts in North America, Royal Gorge offers over 140 kilometers of trails. Located near Soda Springs, it provides diverse terrain suitable for beginners to advanced skiers.
Spooner Lake Cross Country Ski Area:
On the east side of Lake Tahoe, near Incline Village, Spooner Lake offers a network of trails with beautiful views. The Spooner Lake Cross Country Ski Area provides groomed trails for classic and skate skiing.
Donner Memorial State Park:
This park, located near Truckee, offers cross-country skiing opportunities. The area around the Donner Memorial State Park features scenic trails suitable for various skill levels.
Most ski resorts in the area will be opening over Thanksgiving. Many have snow making equipment and have a limited number of lifts operating. Forecasters are calling for snow in the beginning of December.
